MAHJ — Lesson 10

Hand Strategy

Picking a hand, staying flexible, and the all-important "what would you discard?"

Goal: Choose hands you can realistically build, stay flexible early and commit once one hand pulls ahead, manage jokers wisely, and sharpen every discard

Estimated time: 8–11 minutesNeedsLesson 9UnlocksLesson 11

Why it matters: This is where Mahjong stops being mechanical and becomes a real game — strategy separates knowing the rules from actually playing.

What Makes a Hand Easier to Build?

The card lists dozens of hands, and some give you more ways to finish than others. When you compare your candidates, look at these.

Three things that can make a hand easier to build

More places for Jokers — a Joker can fill any spot in a group of 3+ matching tiles (a pung or kong), but never a pair, a single, or a mixed group like NEWS. Hands built mostly from those groups give Jokers more places to help.
More chances to call — on an X (exposed) hand you can call a discard to complete a group of 3+ matching tiles. A C (concealed) hand can call only the tile that completes Mahjong.
More room to adjust — hands that let you pick the suit, the numbers in a run, or a like number (the same number in each suit, like 5-Bam, 5-Crak, 5-Dot) leave more ways to finish.

None of these guarantees a win — weigh them against the tiles you actually hold.
